Christmas Lights

Remember the annual Christmas lights display on the WTOP tower? It was quite impressive!

R J Carpenter remembers:

Now really, really ancient history, but WTOP FM/TV (96.3/ch 9) transmitted
from a relatively short but wide self supporting tower. It was
approximately at the highest point in DC.

Prior to the 1970s energy crisis they entirely covered the tower with many
hundreds of multicolored Christmas lights each year.

One of the traditions of the 5-a-week Ed Walker and Willard Scott "Joy Boys"
show on WRC was for one of their engineers to shoot out one of WTOP's
Christmas lights each night. All make-believe of course. The (ex)WTOP
tower is easily visible from the NBC building.

These days Chans 9 & 7 share a much taller tower next to the original ch 9
tower. 7 & 9 multiplex on the same antenna.

(And no, I don't know who R.J. Carpenter is. I got this off the internet. But he sure has a good memory. -Lee)

Here's a Christmas card for you. It's been going around the internet for a couple of years now; it's the one featuring a reindeer band and Santa; click on each reindeer and he starts doing his thing.

It's great entertainment for your grandchildren. It will keep them mildy amused for at least 5 minutes.
